How we score
Every burger on Burgerverse is scored by Brotherly Burgers on a 0–10 scale. This page explains what that number means. The fuller, first-person version is in our original methodology essay.
One holistic number
A Burgerverse score is a single, holistic editorial judgment, not a formula. There is no fixed weighting of meat, cheese, bun and sauce that we add up to a total. Reasonable components go into the judgment, but the score is the considered verdict of two people who ate the burger, not the output of a spreadsheet.
We say this plainly because the alternative, a rubric with invented decimal weights, would be theatre. A real palate applied consistently is the actual product.
A demanding scale
The scale is intentionally hard. Roughly a 5.0 is an average burger. A 6 is above average. A 7 is good. Anything above 9 is rare. We use the whole range, including the bottom of it: a high score means something here because a low one is possible.
Of the 102 burgers ranked so far, 10 score 9.0 or higher and 7 score below 5.0. We would rather publish a hard number than a flattering one.
The patty is the main character
Flavor balance and execution carry the most weight. The patty is the main character; the cheese, toppings, sauce and bun exist to support, contrast or balance it. Richness needs something to cut it: acidity, brightness, texture, seasoning, structure. A burger that is all richness and no balance does not score well no matter how premium the beef.
Judged as what it is
Each burger is judged on what it is trying to be. A simple smash burger is not marked down for failing to be an elaborate chef-driven burger, and vice versa. We evaluate the burger as served and as the restaurant intends it.
What the score does not include
Price, size, fries, atmosphere, service, reservation difficulty and access do not affect the burger score. A burger is not better because it is cheap, nor worse because the room is loud. Those things matter to your night, so we discuss them in the full review, but they never move the number.
A living comparative model
The ranking is not frozen. Each new burger that enters refines our understanding of every burger already in it, the way more data sharpens a model. So scores and ranks can change: when a burger changes, when a recipe or kitchen changes, when a revisit produces different evidence, or when a larger sample changes how a burger compares to its peers.
A burger can move in the ranking without having changed at all. The field around it moved. When a score changes materially, we preserve the history rather than quietly overwriting it, and future ranking snapshots will make that movement visible.
