7th Street Burger
East Village, Manhattan

Brotherly Breakdown
Written by Brotherly Burgers
7th Street Burger is greasy, simple, and consistent, and its appeal is situational rather than technical. This is not the most technically impressive burger in New York and it is not trying to be.
What it delivers is the melty, gooey, greasy bite people line up for, and it is a great deal better in the exact moment you want it than it looks written down. We assessed it sober, which is worth saying about a burger most of this city meets under different circumstances.
Best for
Fast-casual smashburgers, greasy melty builds, late-night eating, and quick inexpensive meals.
The catch
Technical execution is not the draw. Judged on craft rather than on context, there are better smashburgers in the city.
What it's actually like
7th Street Burger began in the East Village and now runs a large number of New York locations, open late enough that weekend service runs into the early morning. The standard build is a single fresh beef patty with American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and house sauce on a Martin's potato bun. The company's own menu publishes calories and allergens for every item and no descriptions at all, which is about right for what this is.
The comparison we keep coming back to is the bodega bacon, egg and cheese. Not a technical achievement, not trying to be one, and beloved anyway because of when and how you eat it. This burger works the same way. Greasy, simple, melty, gooey, and considerably better in the right moment than on paper.
We are equally direct that it is not among the city's technically strongest smashburgers, and that this is not why we like it.
Two honest notes on the evidence. We do not have component-level notes here, so we are not going to tell you about the crust or the sauce or the bun, and this is a chain, so the location we ate at is not recorded. What we can tell you is what the whole burger does, and that we were sober when we decided.
Strengths
- Greasy, melty, gooey bite that delivers what people come for
- Simple and consistent
- Genuinely better in the moment it is meant for
- Widely available and inexpensive
Why this score
The burger does one thing reliably and that thing is the reason people queue for it. Judged as what it is trying to be, it works.
What limits it is that its quality is contextual. A burger that is much better in the right moment than in the abstract is leaning on something it cannot always supply, and by our own account the craft is not what recommends it.
