Butter Smashburgers
West Village, Manhattan

Brotherly Breakdown
Our own take, from eating it. Written by Brotherly Burgers.
Butter Smash Burgers serves a well-executed halal smashburger built around the fundamentals of the style.
The patty developed a good crust and was seasoned well, while the house sauce complemented the familiar combination of beef, American cheese, onions, and pickles. Its strength is straightforward execution rather than novelty.
Best for
Classic smashburgers, halal burgers, crispy patty edges, American cheese, house sauce, affordable casual meals, and late-night Village dining.
What it's actually like
Butter Smash Burgers is a focused fast-casual operation rather than a chef-driven one. The menu runs to House Burgers, a truffle burger, a fried chicken sandwich, a veggie burger, fries, and milkshakes, and the restaurant states that its menu is halal certified. We ate there in March 2026.
Nothing about the construction is unnecessarily complicated. The current House Burger is smashed beef, American cheese, caramelized onions, pickles, and house sauce on a toasted bun, and the appeal is entirely in the execution.
The crust gave the patty the texture the style depends on, and the seasoning kept the beef flavorful underneath the toppings. The house sauce brought the whole thing together without taking it over. Those three things are what we can tell you, and they are the three that matter most in this format.
A strong burger does not always need dry-aged beef, a custom cheese program, or a complicated sauce. Sometimes the right answer is a classic smashburger served quickly, late, and without a flaw worth naming.
Practical notes: there are two locations, on MacDougal Street and on St. Marks Place, and both stay open late, particularly on weekends. Published closing times vary across the restaurant's own pages, so check the current hours for your location before going. Our notes also do not record whether we ordered the single or the double, so treat the House Burger described here as the build rather than a specific patty count.
