Cafe Cluny
West Village, Manhattan

Brotherly Breakdown
Our own take, from eating it. Written by Brotherly Burgers.
Cafe Cluny serves a solid, conventional West Village bistro burger. It was well cooked and well seasoned, with the standard lettuce, tomato, and onion construction on a brioche bun, and we liked it top down.
The one element with real character is the chipotle mayonnaise, which read herbal rather than smoky. We thought it tasted like it had rosemary in it, though we are not certain of that.
Best for
Classic bistro burgers, lettuce, tomato and onion builds, chipotle mayonnaise, and West Village neighborhood dining.
The catch
This is a conventional burger with no standout component. Nothing was wrong with it and nothing about it demands a trip.
What it's actually like
Cafe Cluny is the West Village bistro from the Odeon and Cafe Luxembourg team, and the Cluny Burger is a straightforward expression of that. The menu builds it on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and chipotle mayonnaise, and it appears across brunch, lunch, brasserie, and dinner. Cheese is a paid addition rather than part of the burger, and we chose cheddar. This assessment is based on one visit.
The execution was right. Well cooked, well seasoned, and the classic topping set doing what a classic topping set is supposed to do. Our phrase for it was that we liked it top down, meaning the whole thing held together rather than one component carrying it.
The chipotle mayonnaise is the part worth mentioning. It did not read smoky, which is what chipotle normally signals. It read herbal. Our best guess is rosemary, and we would rather flag that as a guess than claim we identified it.
That is the review. There is nothing to correct here and nothing that separates it from the other competent bistro burgers within a few blocks of it.
Strengths
- Well cooked and well seasoned patty
- Classic topping set works as intended
- Distinctive herbal chipotle mayonnaise
- Holds together consistently through the burger
Why this score
The cooking and seasoning are right and the classic build is competent throughout, which puts this comfortably above an indifferent bistro burger.
What it lacks is a reason to choose it over its neighbors. The chipotle mayonnaise is the only component pushing in an unexpected direction, and even our reading of that is uncertain.
