What it's actually like

Handcraft Burgers and Brew invited us in to try their smashburger spot near Bryant Park, and we want to say that up front before anything else.

The OG is double smashed patties with sharp American cheddar, Handcraft sauce, shredded romaine, and tomato on a brioche bun. Two things in our notes: the patty had a nice crust, and the sauce was good. On a smash build the crust is the whole point of the format, so getting it right is not nothing. It is also where our component-level notes end, and we are not going to fill in the rest.

The overall impression was of an easy, reliable burger. That is accurate and it is also the ceiling. Nothing here separates it from the many competent smashburgers within a few blocks.

The spot itself is the stronger argument. Quick service, craft beer, good hospitality, and a founder who clearly knows how to build around the restaurant experience rather than only the food. If you work near Bryant Park, it is worth knowing about.
