Smashed
West Village, Manhattan

Brotherly Breakdown
Written by Brotherly Burgers
Smashed does the classic smashburger well. The Classic Smash is a competent, properly executed version of the format, which is the thing a smashburger counter most needs to get right.
The Big Schmacc, its Big Mac interpretation, was our preference of the two, with a solid sauce, and we thought it a better version of the reference than the reference is. Neither burger is exceptional, and both are good.
Best for
Big Mac style burgers, fast-casual smashburgers, classic burger sauces, and quick inexpensive West Village meals.
The catch
Neither burger distinguishes itself within a crowded category. Both are good executions of familiar formats rather than reinventions of them.
What it's actually like
Smashed is a fast-casual chain with locations across Manhattan and Brooklyn. We ate at the West Village shop and ordered both of the burgers this profile ranks.
The Classic Smash is the one to judge the place on, and it holds up. It comes as a single, double, or triple with American cheese, griddled and raw onions, pickles, and SMASHED sauce on a Martin's roll, and it is a properly executed version of the classic format. Competent, correct, and exactly what this kind of counter should be turning out.
The Big Schmacc was our preference of the two. It is their Big Mac interpretation, currently built as double patties with double American cheese, raw onions, lettuce, pickles, and SMASHED sauce on a triple sesame bun. The sauce is solid, and it is a better version of that idea than the original. If you can only have one, that is the one we would take.
One honest note on the record. This is the entire depth of what we wrote down: a single sauce observation, belonging to the Big Schmacc, and nothing on the patties, the buns, or any topping. So we are not going to give you an account of those, and the Big Schmacc's sauce note stays with the Big Schmacc.
Neither is exceptional, and this city has a lot of smashburgers. Both are good.
Strengths
- Classic Smash is a competent, properly executed classic smashburger
- Big Schmacc is a strong Big Mac interpretation
- Big Schmacc sauce is solid
- Straightforward, inexpensive format
Why this score
The Classic Smash does the fundamentals of the format properly, and the Big Schmacc adds a Big Mac interpretation that improves on its reference. Both are good.
What keeps the profile where it is, is that neither burger has anything that would make somebody cross town for it in a city with this many smashburgers.
