Brotherly Breakdown

Written by Brotherly Burgers

The burger at THE GALLERY by Odo is distinctive and balanced, with phenomenal sansho and very tender meat. Its Japanese character is clear, but the beef needs more presence and the overall flavor needs more impact.

Best for

Pronounced sansho character, smaller burgers, very tender meat, Japanese restaurant burgers, and Flatiron lunch.

The catch

The seasoning is more compelling than the beef flavor, leaving a good burger that needs more depth and impact to become exceptional.

What it's actually like

THE GALLERY by Odo combines a Japanese restaurant and art space in Flatiron. Created by chef Hiroki Odo, it is the sister restaurant to Odo next door.

Nick tried the burger in August 2026. Sansho was the standout: phenomenal, immediately distinctive, and the clearest expression of the burger's Japanese character. The meat was very tender, although its beef flavor was less pronounced than we wanted.

The vegetables worked well. Bibb lettuce was a welcome part of the build, and the tomato contributed without overwhelming the burger. Raw red onion completed the remembered toppings.

The burger was on the smaller side and balanced overall. Its limitation was not excessive sansho; that was its strongest feature. The complete bite simply needed more flavor impact, particularly from the beef. It was an interesting, enjoyable burger, but its distinctive seasoning was more memorable than the burger as a whole.

One note for anyone looking for it now: this was THE GALLERY's own burger, served as a limited run, and it is not on the current lunch or dinner menus. The lunch menu does carry a separate line of burgers under the HALL name, shared with Odo's American bar on the same block, built on a wagyu blend patty with sansho soy, American cheese, and fried onion. Those are a different program, and we have not reviewed them.

Strengths

  • Phenomenal sansho
  • Very tender meat
  • Good Bibb lettuce and tomato that does not overwhelm
  • Balanced overall composition

Why this score

The sansho, tenderness, and well-judged vegetables make this a good burger with a distinct identity. More pronounced beef flavor and greater overall impact would make the complete bite more compelling.
