The Rankings
The most iconic burger in NYC. A 10oz double wagyu cheeseburger, griddled and pressed, cut tableside by a white-gloved server. American cheese, pickles, and dijonnaise on a squishy bun. It's theatrical and it's worth every dollar. The patties are seared on the outside, pink and juicy inside, with the kind of cheese melt that sticks to every surface.

Named one of the best burgers in the world, and we agree it belongs in that conversation. Chef Mike Bagale (ex-Alinea) gets Parmigiano Reggiano to behave like American cheese by blending it with hot cream and gelatin. The result is a flavor complexity that no other tavern burger achieves. They make only 12 per night. Get there at 4 PM.

The Brixton Burger is made from a blend of chuck, brisket, and short rib, topped with gruyère, garlic aioli, and balsamic glazed onions on a soft milk bun. Limited quantity each evening. One of the most memorable burgers we've had in NYC. The meat blend has a richness that single-cut burgers can't replicate.
Price $36
Emmett's does two burgers and both are worth your time, but the dry-aged version is the star. The aging process gives the patty a nuttier, deeper beef flavor that pairs perfectly with their simple American cheese and soft bun. It's not trying to be fancy. It's trying to be the best version of a cheeseburger, and it gets close.

Historic tavern since 1880, now serving a smash burger that earns its place among the WV elite. Proper sear, good cheese, and the kind of no-nonsense execution that makes you want a second one with a draft beer.
Price $26
Most people come to L'Artusi for the pasta, and they should. But the burger is a thick, preposterously juicy specimen with crisp rosemary potatoes that might make you forget the cacio e pepe. Available at the bar for walk-ins, which is how you should do it.
Price $26
Angie Mar's Le B serves only 9 burgers a night from the bar. This is one of those spots where the limited availability creates hype, but the burger actually backs it up. We were split on this one on our first visit, but the quality of the beef and the bistro setting make it a genuine West Village experience.

The best value burger in the West Village by a wide margin. Operating out of a gas station on West 4th, the griddle is visible and everything is made to order. At $8.99, scoring 8.5 (Elite tier), this is the best bang-for-buck burger in Manhattan.
